The story of Elderton begins in 1894, on the quiet banks of the North Para River in Nuriootpa. Here, early German settlers—the Scholz family—took a chance on the rich Barossa soil, planting vineyards that would one day become iconic.
Two decades later, in 1916, the land caught the eye of Samuel Elderton Tolley. Captivated by its potential, he purchased the property and gave it a name that would endure: Elderton. He built a grand homestead at the heart of the Estate, a place where family life intertwined with the rhythm of the vineyard.
For years, the fruit grown here was sent to his family’s winery, helping build the foundations of what would become a celebrated Barossa legacy. And for a long time, the Estate flourished—quietly shaping the future of the region, one vintage at a time.
In 2003, the second generation—brothers Cameron and Allister—took over the family estate. Together with their wives, Jules and Rebecca, they continue to guide Elderton Wines with the same hands-on dedication that built its foundations.
As Elderton looks toward welcoming the third generation, the focus remains firmly on what the family does best: crafting estate-grown, authentically Barossan wines. Innovation continues, but always as thoughtful evolution—refinements in the vineyard and winery that strengthen tradition rather than replacing it.
What has always defined Elderton still stands strong today. The family remains committed to the varieties that shaped their past and will carry them into the future. will never change.

Elderton Command Shiraz 2017 – 96 points
This does command respect thanks to the fruit coming off 123yo vines and the care with it from that moment right through to the winemaking. It is powerful and divine. Lush with the dark fruit coated with chocolate, pepper and coffee. The palate feels all velvety with the tannins neatly placed, the oak integrated and with a glass in hand, a sense that all’s well with the world.

Elderton Command Shiraz 2018 – 95 points
From 124yo estate vines in Nuriootpa. Matured 30 months in new American and French oak puncheons. Brooding Barossa shiraz of billowing character. Smoked mettwurst and pan juices. Spicy dark and red berries of all kinds. No small dollop of milk chocolate oak. Quintessential Barossa, replete with generous breadth and enduring length, sustained by fine-ground tannins of considerable endurance.

Elderton Command Shiraz 2019 – 96 points
Estate-grown shiraz planted circa 1894, aged for 24 months in new French and American oak puncheons. Rich and commanding as always, with intense dark plum, blackberry and black cherry fruits, fruitcake spice, black strap licorice, high-cocoa dark chocolate, cedar and roasting meats. Full bodied and pure with superb fruit depth, superfine gypsum-like tannins and a concentrated and balanced finish that lingers admirably.

Elderton Command Shiraz 2020 – 96 points
Elderton’s iconic Command Shiraz is sourced from an 1894-planted block of ancestor vines on its Nuriootpa estate; matured for an extended period in new French and American oak puncheons. Full bodied, rich and commanding, as the name suggests, with thick-shouldered blackberry and plum fruits cut with baking spices, licorice, dark chocolate, earth and punchy cedar tones. Weighty and opulent with thick, gypsum-like tannin support, plenty of Barossa horsepower and a finish that trails off persistently with flavours of ripe berries, spice and cedar.

Elderton Command Shiraz 2021 – 96 points
I guess you could call the Command a ‘regional classic’, it’s certainly built a reputation as a cellar-worthy shiraz. Not a whopping wine at all. There’s elegance and grace within its form. Velvety smooth satsuma plum and blackforest fruits, layers of spice. Well-integrated French and American oak, shoyu, dark chocolate, roasting meats, cedar, tobacco leaf and earth. Cascading, powdery tannins provide ample support and the long finish features ripe plum, roast meat and chocolate tones as it slowly fades away. It’ll certainly cellar like a champion, but it is approachable and very enjoyable even now.

Elderton Command Shiraz 2022 – 95 points
Elderton’s Command Shiraz has a strong pedigree indeed; sourced from a single block of 1894-planted shiraz on the outskirts of Nuriootpa. It’s full-bodied but not overbearing, classically structured but with a contemporary edge, and there is no doubt that it is a regional classic. Ripe doris plum, blackberry and black cherry with complex layers of brown spice and French and American oak. Hints of dark chocolate, pan juices, cedar, tobacco, light leather tones and earth. Impressive depth and fruit weight is on show with spicy oak sliding into the black fruits, a curtain of fine-grained tannin and a persistent, elegant finish.
