Rowland and Shelley Short came to McLaren Vale about 8 years ago.
Rowland – an old sea dog, and therefore an enthusiastic gin drinker (strictly for the health benefits you understand) decided to bring to fruition his dream of a small batch artisan gin.
This is an exercise in perfect sustainability – gin made from grapes grown on the property, then distilled on the property and finally bottled on the property – all by hand.
While out to dinner with family celebrating a birthday, Rowland asked for ideas for a name for the new gin. Henry, his 17 year old grandson, quick as a flash, suggested “Settlers Gin”, picking up on the history of South Australia and its free settlers who arrived by sea from the UK to take up land grants in 1836.
Being a South Australian gin, some botanicals needed to be native to South Australia. Muntrie berries from the Coorong were chosen along with lemon myrtle from the Adelaide Hills.
